HPIC Applauds WHO’s Decision to Add Sunscreen to Essential Medicines List
HPIC applauds the World Health Organization’s decision to add sunscreen to its essential medicines list. This marks a significant advancement for thousands of individuals living with Albinism, a genetic disorder that dramatically increases the risk—up to a thousand-fold—of developing skin cancer. Congratulations are also extended to the Global Albinism Alliance for their key role in achieving this landmark decision.
Sunscreen can literally mean the difference between life and death for those with Albinism. For years, HPIC has worked tirelessly with partners to deliver vital sunscreen to individuals with Albinism living in vulnerable communities in Africa, where access to this potentially life-saving product is often limited or nonexistent.

One notable initiative, the ESCAPE project, was launched in collaboration with ADRA Canada. This project delivered essential sunscreen to thousands in need in Tanzania and included an extensive public awareness campaign. Local health workers were empowered to better identify and treat early signs of skin cancer, further supporting the well-being of people with Albinism.
In Eswatini, a southern African country with a higher-than-average prevalence of Albinism, HPIC continues to support vulnerable individuals by working to provide access to vital skin protection supplies through local partners.
None of this would be possible without the generosity of the Canadian pharmaceutical industry. Special recognition goes to Kenvue Canada, whose consistent sunscreen donations have significantly improved the health and quality of life for thousands of people with Albinism living in impoverished communities.
Thanks to incredible pharmaceutical and humanitarian partners, HPIC improves the health of over one million vulnerable people every year—including those with Albinism—by providing access to medicine, health supplies, and community education.
